Xela (Quetzaltenango)
Xela is a sweet city in the north of Guatemala. While Antigua got all of the charm — Spanish colonial buildings and cobbled streets — Xela is the endearing nickname for Quetzaltenango, a city in the Guatemalan highlands.
For those travelers serious about learning Spanish, Xela is one of the spots in the world for the task. The city's inhabitants are patient with language learners and it's a completely different learning vibe than other places in Guate.
It's also just a lovely city on its own, and it makes a fantastic starting point for travelers trekking in the highlands.
